Kevin Flynn was a video game designer for Encom International who joined the company shortly after graduating from CalTech. His work quickly gained fame amongst gamers, and in 1981 Flynn opened an arcade featuring the games he made for Encom. After a dispute with CEO Ed Dillinger over credit for his work, Flynn was fired from Encom, but the rising popularity of his games prompted the programmer's rehiring in 1982, this time as Vice President of Creative Development. A year later, Dillinger was forced out of his job by the board of directors and Flynn took over as CEO, leading the company into a golden age with arcade games like Space Paranoids, Matrix Blaster, Vice Squad and Tron, the latter becoming the best-selling game of all time.
In 1985, after the death of his wife, Flynn announced his retirement from Encom to create what he called "a digital frontier that will reshape the human condition." But this new frontier apparently never came to pass, as Flynn vanished mysteriously in 1989 without a trace. Despite the fact that two decades have passed with no evidence of the visionary programmer's survival, some of his devotees -- like the members of the Flynn Lives Organization -- believe that Kevin Flynn is still alive and in hiding...
