Campus Overview

CAMPUS OVERVIEW

Our three hundred acre campus dates from the 17th century when much of the estate of Roger Wellminster, a successful merchant turned farmer, was willed to his brother upon his death. His brother, Rev. Hummel Wellminster, opened Wellminster Academy to fifty young men of families of the surrounding villages. He offered them religious training, as well as instruction in Philosophy, Geography and Agriculture. Our campus has grown, thanks to the careful stewardship of friends of the school, to include three dormitories as well as the following landmarks:

1. The Hunter Spivey Library of 30,000 volumes
2. The Francis Bell Performing Arts Center
3. The Student Commons complex and Dining Hall
4. The Franklin Art Center and Gallery
5. The Alumni Lounge
6. Updated Turk Athletic Facility anchored by basketball and tennis courts, Olympic size pool, indoor track and fitness center

Graceful Faculty homes are within comfortable distance of the campus, and the Drake Chapel is the center of religious life for students of all faith communities.

About

ABOUT WELLMINSTER

16 students gathered in a converted barn in August of 1858 under the tutelage of Rev. Hummell Wellminster. The mission of the Wellminster Day School was 'to understand the past, to create the future' and to prepare young men of the Wellminster Township for their roles as leaders of their community. Today, Wellminster Academy prepares over five hundred girls and boys from every region of the nation for success in college, industry, arts, citizenship, service and life in a twenty-first century state of the art coeducational setting.

Wellminster maintains the highest standards of achievement in academics, athletics and the arts while focusing on the individual student. Our blend of meaningful traditions and innovative educational methods emphasizes the balance between personal discipline and personal creativity. Academic excellence, we believe, is the result of a community of learners and instructors who seek not only to meet external expectations, but who develop and maintain internal standards of rigor, review and renewal. We dedicate our facility, faculty, and the resources of our larger community to stimulating and nurturing those learners, and are rewarded with pride in their consistent high achievement.

WELLMINSTER AT A GLANCE

THE SCHOOL: Wellminster is a 4th-12th grade, college preparatory, coeducational boarding school with five hundred and seventy two students: 288 girls and 284 boys. We house 492 boarders, and accommodate 80 day students and children of faculty and staff.

THE FACULTY: The faculty and administration of Wellminster includes 87 full and part time members. With two sections of 4th-6th graders averaging thirty students per class, our Middle School and High School classrooms average 13-15 students per group.

TUITION AND FEES: The tuition, fees and charges for boarders is $43,867 for boarders and $32,578 for day students. Current tuition supports roughly 45 percent of the cost of each student's education and students receive $3 million dollars annually in full or partial scholarship and financial assistance from the school. An education at Wellminster is subsidized to a large extent from income from endowment, past gifts and current annual giving.
