Space Paranoids Online

April 2, 2010

At the Encom Press Event in San Francisco, Alan Bradley announced that Encom would be releasing a new version of Space Paranoids that could be played online. The new edition will include fifteen levels designed by Kevin Flynn that were omitted from the game's first release in the early 1980s. In his speech, Bradley noted that Encom was pushing for an completely overhauled version of Space Paranoids, but thanks to his direct intervention the game remains unaltered from the original Flynn-written code.

When Sam Flynn's locker is opened on Unlocksamflynn.com, one of the items inside is a copy of Kevin Flynn's book Digital Gaming. Various words have been underlined on one of the pages; the underlined letters spell out encominternational.com/spaceparanoidsonline, a teaser page for the game. It depicts Recognizers flying past a countdown clock set to expire on Thursday, May 6 at approximately 4 pm EST. Presumably, when the clock hits zero, the game will be released on that page.

Clicking on one of the passing Recognizers causes it to explode. Flynn Lives badges are awarded to people who destroy 99 or 999 Recognizers.

At 4 PM, the countdown clock hit zero and the game's logo appeared; clicking on it led to http://www.spaceparanoidsonline.com, the game's website. It is a browser-based version of the Space Paranoids arcade game playable at SDCC 2009.

At various points within the game, it is possible to drive through a wall and discover hidden rooms with a barcode in them. (Hidden rooms are indicated by the user interface disappearing from the screen.) The numerical values of the different barcodes can be used as codes on Kevin Flynn's work server to unlock more of Flynn's files.
